James Bostock was born in in Hanley, Staffordshire on 11th June 1917. He was a British wood-engraver and artist.
Bostock attended Medway School of Art, Rochester and the Royal College of Art, London (1936-1939) where his tutors included Edward Bawden, Eric Ravilious, Paul Nash and John Nash. It was there that he first became attracted to printmaking and wood engraving.
By 1950 he had been elected a member of both the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers (later the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers) and the Society of Wood Engravers. He exhibited regularly at the annual exhibitions of these societies and his work was often included in the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition.
During the 1950s and 1960s Bostock experimented with colour on a few blocks, usually by overprinting with linoblocks. Although achieving some remarkable results Bostock considered that a black and white image was always more powerful. Bostock also produced engravings on Perspex, vulcanite and xylonite.
Examples of Bostock's work are held in the collections of the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Council collection and the Hunt Botanical Library, Pennsylvania, USA.
James Bostock died in Margate, Kent on 26th May 2006, aged 89.
