Arbroath is a much-painted area of Scotland, it is here that Swan spent his early childhood and where he returned to frequently throughout his adult life. This watercolour successfully conveys the simplicity of fishing Village life whilst incorporating the lessons of the burgeoning St. Ives School where artists were profoundly affected by the landscape and light.

Whilst this early example of Swan's work is very representational, his later abstract works continued to incorporate the same play with colour and tonal balance.
