The influences of the St. Ives School would have had tremendous impact on Swan in 1959. This painting expresses completely the ethos of this period, the influences of Paul Feiler, Sir Terry Frost, Roger Hilton and Peter Lanyon are evident in this work along with those of his old compatriot William Scott who at this time was beginning to move away from representational work. It is an excellent example of all that was thriving in the artistic communities in the 1950's; a period of painting that is today highly regarded and extensively collected.
