-----------------------------------------------------
This early painting by Sir Gerald Kelly was painted a few years before Kelly's breakthrough as an artist. It shows youthful competence and confident artistic choices. He maintains control of a difficult subject whilst at ease expressing the movement of the waves and the opaque summer light of a sunset. Kelly was twenty five when he painted this view of Sandown; a young man that clearly had an advanced understanding and technical knowhow of the building blocks of painting. Kelly was to become one of the UK's most important and best loved painters throughout his lifetime, a reputation that continues to this day.
Sir Gerald Kelly was President of the Royal Academy from 1949 to 1954
