Axel Johannes Salto was born in Copenhagen on 17th November 1889. He was a Danish designer and ceramicist.

Salto attended Københavns Tekniske Skole (Copenhagen Technical College (1907-1909) and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (1909-1914). Initially a traditional painter, Salto soon became interested by modernism and it's progressive aesthetic and spent time in Montmartre, Paris before WW1. As the author and founder of the art magazine Klingen (The Blade) (1917–1920), Salto was also an important contributor to artistic debate in Denmark.

Salto created porcelain designs for Bing & Grøndahl which were shown at the (1925) International Exhibition in Paris. He then worked with Carl Hallier at his Frederiksberg studio, briefly at Saxbo Stoneware, and finally at Royal Copenhagen, where he was their designer from 1933 until the 1950s.

Salto exhibited extensively. He first exhibited in Copenhagen in 1922. Group exhibitions include Autumn Art Exhibition (Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling), Copenhagen (1913-1921); Association of Graphic Artists (1917); Liljevalch's Art Hall (Liljevalchs Konsthall), Stockholm (1919); World Exposition, Paris (1925, 1937); Brooklyn Museum, New York (1927); Graphic Arts, Helsinki (1931); Grønningen (1934, 1936-45); London (1938); Oslo (1946) and Paris (1949)

Axel Salto died in Copenhagen on 21st March 1961, aged 71.
