Additional Information

Gunnar Larsson was born on 19th August 1925. He was a Swedish painter and designer.

Larsson attended Otte Sköld’s Painting School (1950) and the Valand Art School, Göthenberg (1951–1954) where he studied under the Hungarian-Slovako-Czecho-Swedish Surrealist artist Endre Nemes (1909-1985). Larsson also attended the ceramics program (1959) run by Peter Volkous (1924-2002) at the University of California, Berkeley, USA

Larsson was member of 'Grupp 54' which was an artists' association founded (1954) by Valand Art School students connected to the teacher Endre Nemes. Many of Neme's students were refused membership in Gothenburg's Artists' Club, which was dominated by Gothenburg colorists who opposed the new abstract and surrealist art. 'Grupp 54' was founded in opposition.

Larson exhibited (1959) at the Galleri Gummeson in Stockholm. Group exhibitions include Värmland Art Association's exhibitions (1943-51); National Museum's annual 'Unga Tecknare' exhibition, Stockholm (1950 and 1951) and their 'Svensk Färggrafik' exhibition (1953); with 'Grupp 54', Galleri 54, Göthenburg; 'Unga Vårsalong', Värlands Museum (1952) and travelling exhibitions to Amsterdam, Milan and Germany.

Gunnar Larsson was married to ceramicist Lisa Larson (b.1931).

Examples of his works are held in the collections of Moderna Museet and National Museum, Stockholm; Gothenburg Art Museum and Skissernas Museum, Lund.

Gunnar Larsson died in Stockholm on 2nd June 2020, aged 94.
