Jean Deyrolle was born in Nogent-sur-Marne on 20th August 1911. He was a French painter.

Deyrolle attended École de Paris (1928). After the Liberation Deyrolle returned to Paris where he began to experiment with abstraction. He exhibited his first abstract works at the Salon d?Automne de la Liberation (1944) and was championed by the dealer Jeanne Bucher and the critic Wilhelm Uhde, who would also become one of his most important patrons. Deyrolle began exhibiting at the avant-garde Salon de Mai and the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles. His first solo exhibition of abstract work was with the pioneering Galerie Denise René (1948 and subsequently 1951, 1953, with a major retrospective in 1966). He also exhibited at Galerie La Boétie (1951, 1953 and 1954)

Deyrolle exhibited extensively in France and internationally where his work received critical acclaim. He participated in numerous major group shows including 'Tendences de l'Art Abstrait?, Galerie Denise René, Paris (1948), Sao Paulo (1949); 'Abstract Painting', Betty Parson Gallery, New York (1949); 'French Contemporary Art', Tokyo (1951); 'Young Painters of the École de Paris', London (1952); 'Young European Painters', Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (1954); Sao-Paulo Biennale and Milan Triennale (1957); 'L?Art Contemporain', Grand Palais, Paris (1963).

Jean Deyrolle was one of the most highly celebrated abstract painters of the post-war School of Paris and his career Deyrolle became recognised as one of the greatest painters of his time and received several major awards including the prestigious 'Prix Kandinsky'

His works are held in the collections of numerous art museums including Musée d?Art Moderne de Ville de Paris; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Bibliothéque Nationale, Paris; Brussels; Budapest; Copenhagen; Oslo; Turin; Sao Paolo and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York.

Jean Deyrolle died in Toulon, France on 30th August 1967, aged 56.
