Eric Ragnar Elfwén was born in St Nicolai parish, Stockholm on 16th August 1921 . He was a Swedish painter, sculptor and designer.

Elfwén attended the Tekniska Skolan (Technical School), Stockholm (1938-1939) - before it became the Konstfack (University College of Arts, Crafts and Design) in 1945. He then studied under the Swedish artist Edvin Ollers (1888-1959) at Ollers Målarskola (1939-1941). Edvin Ollers was also a teacher at the Tekniska Skolan from 1941 until 1943. Alongside the traditional art studies, he taught glass design, ceramics, silversmithing, textiles and illustration.

Elfwén then attended both Isaac Grunewald’s (Grünewalds Målarskola) and Otte Sköld’s (Otte Skölds målarskola) painting schools (1941-1942) and took study trips to Denmark (1945 and 1946), France (1949-1950), Belgium, Holland and Spain (1950-1951)

Elfwén also studied Architectural studies at Université Libre de Brussels, Belguim and glass painting under the French stained glass window artist Gabriel Loire (1904-1996) in Chartres, France.

His debut exhibition was in 1944 at Galleri Gummesons - Gummesons Gallery is one Scandinavia's foremost contemporary art galleries. Launched in 1912 by Carl Gummeson, a local book dealer, it quickly forged a reputation for supporting Modern Art. In 1946 Elfwén exhibited at Elsa Lindström's 'Modern Konst i Hemmiljö' (Modern art in the home) in Storgatan 48 in, Stockholm.

Other exhibitions include Lilla Galleriet, Stockholm (1952) - with Sven Ahlgren (1922-1997) and Lars Rolf (1923-2001); Olsen’s Konstsalong, Gothenburg (1948); Södertälje (1947) and Brussels (1950). Group exhibitions in Skövde, Gothenburg, Borås and Enköping

Public works included the stained glass and an altar sculpture in Gamleby church in (1959) and subsequent restoration work for the entire church (1969-1971).

Eric Elfwén married four times - to Ella Engberg (1943), the actress Lill-Tollie Zellman (1946), Georgette Woudhuijsen (1951) and, from 1958, to the Swedish artist, textile and graphic designer Leida Rives-Elfwén (1915–1989).

Examples of Eric Elfwén’s works are held in the collections of the The National Museum (Nationalmuseum) and Moderna Museet in Stockholm; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and the art museums in Borås, Jönköping, Kalmar and Eskilstuna.

Eric Elfwén died on 30th December 2008 in Gamleby parish, Kalmar County, aged 87.
