Additional Information

Hans Bernhardt (Bamse) Kragh-Jacobsen was born in Copenhagen on 3rd February 1913. He was a Danish painter, jazz pianist and restaurateur.

Bamse Kragh-Jacobsen attended Reimann-Schule, an avant-garde art school, akin to Bauhaus, in Berlin (1933) before returning to Copenhagen during WW2 and working as a commercial artist at an advertising agency

Kragh-Jacobsen first exhibited at the Artists' Autumn Exhibition (KE / Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling), Copenhagen in 1945.

In 1947, Kragh-Jacobsen, along with the artists Ib Geertsen, Niels Macholm, Albert Mertz and Richard Winther, was a co-founder of the Linien II (Line II) artists association. Linien (the predecessor to Linien II) was founded in Denmark in the late 1930s and focused on Abstraction and Symbolism. After the Second World War, the emphasis of the revived association (Linien II) was Concrete Art.

Linen II's first exhibition - which also featured performances and concerts alongside the paintings and sculptures - was held at Tokantens Galerie, Copenhagen in Summer of 1948. By 1950, other members included Vilhelm Bjerke Petersen, Richard Mortensen, Sonja Ferlov Mancoba, Robert Jacobsen, Paul Gadegaard, Gunnar Aagaard Andersen, Henrik Buch, Helge Jacobsen, Søren Georg Jensen and Knud Nielsen. Linen II was dissolved in 1952.

Kragh-Jacobsen exhibited extensively - Notable group exhibitions include with Linien II (1947-1951); Forårsudstilling (Spring Exhibition), Kunsthal Charlottenburg, Copenhagen (1969); Grønningen (1970-71; 'Konkret i Norden 1907-1960' (Concrete in the Nordic countries 1907-1960), Kunstmuseum Brandts (1988). Solo exhibitions include Tokanten, Copenhagen (1945); Copenhagen (1967, 1972, 1979 and 1992); Atelier 53, Copenhagen (1982 and 1986); Riis & Givskov, Horsens (1983); Unique Art, Stribgaarden (1984); Bispegården, Kalundborg (1984).

As a restaurateur, Kragh-Jacobsen managed Tokanten (1945-1956) and Vingården (1956-79).

Bamse Kragh-Jacobsen died in Copenhagen on 17th February 1992, aged 79.
