Additional Information

Lars-Gunnar Nordström was born in Helsinki on 19th August 1924. He was a Finnish painter, designer and sculptor who is considered one of the earliest and most determined pioneers of non-figurative Finnish art.

Nordström studied Interior Design at Central School of Art and Design (Taideteollisessa Keskuskoulussa) in Helsinki (1946-49) and took study trips to Paris and New York. It was while he was in Paris, having met the Italian painter Alberto Magnell (1888-1971), that Nordström abandoned his cubist-influenced figurative style in favour of abstract concrete forms.

Nordström first exhibited in 1949. Early solo exhibitions include Helsinki (1949), Galerie Artek, Helsinki (1952 and 1955), Galerie Hybler, Copenhagen (1966), Galerie Bleue, Stockholm (1966), Denver, USA (1968), Åbo Konstmuseum, Finland (1971) and Galerie Ferm, Malmö (1975). Group exhibitions include Nordiska Konstförbundet, Copenhagen (1949), Nordisk Grafisk Union, Helsinki (1951), Quelques Peintres Finlandais, Paris (1951), Nordiska Konstförbundet, Bergen, Norway (1953), Ung finsk konst, Stockholm and Gothenburg (1953), Serigraphic Society, New York (1958), Konstruktivism, Moderna Museet, Stockholm (1974), Moscow (1975) and Finnish Constructivism, USA (1979)

Nordström exhibited extensively throughout Scandinavia, every year, between 1966 and 1997. He had a major Retrospective in 1997.

Examples of Nordström works are held in the collections of Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Musee Nationale d'Art Moderne, Paris; Ateneum, Helsinki; Åbo Konstmuseum, Finland; Riksgalleriet, Oslo and Espoo Museum of Modern Art (EMMA), Helsinki.

Lars-Gunnar Nordström died in Helsinki on 10th August 2014, aged 89.
