Additional Information

Arne Lundsteen Hansen was born in Copenhagen on 9th March 1921. He was a Danish painter, ceramicist and printmaker.

Hansen grew up in the Nørrebro district of Copenhagen. He studied painting and design with the Danish painter and art teacher Jacobine (Bizzie) Høyer (1888-1971) at the art school she established in Copenhagen (1936-38). Hansen then attended (albeit intermittently between 1938 until 1945) The School of Visual Arts at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.

Hansen first exhibted in 1945 at the Kunsthal Charlottenborg (Charlottenborg Exhibition Hall) in Copenhagen. The Kunsthal Charlottenborg is the official exhibition gallery of the Royal Danish Academy of Art.

In 1950 he became a member of Vrå, the Danish Artist Association founded by Svend Engelund in 1942 and exhibited with them at the Vrå-udstillingen held at the Vrå Højskole (Vrå University) in 1950, 1953, 1955-59 and 1961-93.

In 1960 Hansen became a member of the Grønningen group of artists. Formed in 1915 and named after the street (Grønningen) in Copenhagen where their first art exhibition was held, it is one of the oldest and most important artist groups in Denmark. It currently has 54 members and still hosts annual exhibitions at the Charlottenborg Exhibition Hall. Hansen exhibited with them between 1960 and 1971.

Hansen participated in numerous art exhibitions. Most notably these include Museum Galeria, Paris (1953); 'Kunsten 54', Charlottenborg (1954, 'Kunsten 55', Jugendstil (1955), Gallery Modern, Silkeborg (1974, 1977, 1980, 1984, 1986), Gothenburg (1955), Copenhagen (1955), Jysk Kunstgal, Aarhus (1963), '75 malerier 1957-67' (75 paintings 1957-67) Gallery Lien, Slettestrand (1967), Herman A. Kähler ceramic workshop, Naestved (1969) 'Skulptur i Eventyrhaven' (Sculpture in Wonderland) Haven, Odense (1971), 'Kirkelig kunst' (Ecclesiastical art) Galery Ti, Tistrup (1978) 'Container '82', Sønderjyll. Kunstakad (1982), 'On paper and sculptures', Hjørring Kunstmus (1985) 'Kirkekunst', Esbjerg Kunstpav (1986) 'Landskaber', Gallery Profile, Aarhus (1991).

From around 1958, Hansen combined working as a ceramicist - producing many designs for the Kähler Keramik workshop in Næstved, alongside his life as a painter. Hansen also produced altarpieces and furnishings for several churches, especially in North Jutland (Skagen, Hulsig, Bindslev) and ceramic decorations to many town halls, schools, churches and industrial works throughout Denmark.

Hansen was honoured with a retrospective exhibition at the Hjørring Art Museum in 1992. In 2011 the Vendsyssel Art Museum held a major retrospective exhibition of over 100 works dating from the 1940s up to the early 2000s.

Arne L. Hansen died on 3rd August 2009, aged 87 years.
