Erik Arthur Olson was born in Halmstad on 9th May 1901. He was a Swedish painter, sculptor, stained glass artist and designer

In 1918, Olso attended (drawing and painting) evening classes at the Halmstad Technical School and in 1919 exhibited in an amateur exhibition at the Halmstad secondary school. That Summer, Olson met the Swedish artist, writer and pioneer of the Swedish modernist art movement, Gösta Adrian-Nilsson (often referred to as GAN) (1884-1965).

In 1924, along with his cousin Waldemar Lorentzon (1899-1984), Olson attended Fernand Léger's painting academy, Academie Moderne, in Paris. He studied in Italy for a year in 1925 before returning to Sweden to complete his National Service. He returned to Paris in 1927 where he worked for Fernand Léger in his studio.

In 1929, Olson married the painter Solvig Sven-Nilsson and became a co-founder of Halmstad Group (Halmstadgruppen). The Halmstad Group introduced Surrealism in Sweden during the 1930s. The other members were his brother, Axel Olson (1899-1986) - who, in 1922 studied in Berlin under the Russian painter and sculptor Alexander Archipenko (1897-1964) - Waldemar Lorentzon, Esaias Thorén (1901-1981), Sven Jonson (1902-1981) and Stellan Mörner (1896-1979)

Olson exhibited extensively. Notable exhibitions include Halmstad (1923) - with Axel Olson and Waldemar Lorentzon; Konsthallen, Gothenburg (1928) - with Gösta Adrian-Nilsson, Christian Berg and Otto G. Carlsund; Paris (1935), Färg och Form (Colour and Shape), Stockholm (1946). Halmstad Group exhibitions in Gothenburg (1932-1936), Galleri Modern, Stockholm (1931), Malmö (1933 and 1944), Kunsthalle Helsinki, Helsinki (1934), Liljevalchs Konsthall, Stockholm (1939 an 1955). Group exhibitions include Maison Watteau, Paris (1924), Galerie Mots et Images, Paris (1928), at the Salon des Surinépendants and the Salon des Independents, Paris; Copenhagen (1935), London (1936), Galerie Beaux-Arts, Paris (1938), Galerie Denise René, Paris (1953) as well as exhibitions in Munich, Saltzburg and New York.

Examples of Olson's works are held in the collections of Moderna Museet (Museum of Modern Art) and Nationalmuseum (National Museum) in Stockholm, Nasjonalmuseet (National Gallery), Oslo, Gothenburg Art Museum and the Norrköping, Gävle, Eksjö, Lidköping and Halmstad museums in Sweden.

Erik Olson died in Sweden in February 1986, aged 85
