Additional Information

Gustav (Gösta) Werner was born in Stockholm on 30th May 1909. He was a Swedish artist, sculptor and designer.

Initially, Werner was a sailor - qualifying as a Seaman in 1935 and Meteorologist in 1944. Werner then attended Isaac Grünewald's School of Painting in Stockholm (1944-47), Academia Libre, Stockholm (1947-1949) and Académie André Lhöte, Paris (1949).

It was in Paris that Werner was first exposed to cubism, which directly led to his concretist approach in the early 1950s. His background as a sailor - the ocean, the winds, the clouds, the changes in the atmosphere - were to be a constant source of inspiration for him as an artist.

Werner travelled frequently - England, Italy, Greece, Turkey, USA, India, Holland, Belgium, Germany and Africa. In 1960 he became a member of the group Aktiv Färg (Active Colour).

The art critic F. Edwards wrote in Stockholms-Tidningen (1st November 1962) that Werner's work had "a graphic finesse and a colouristic brittleness that belongs to the most refined Swedish contemporary art"

Werner first exhibited in Norrköping - with his brother, Nalle Werner in 1951 (and again in 1963). Other exhibitions include 'De UngasÂ’ Salon, Stockholm (1952), Sundsvall (1953), Gummesons Konstgalleri, Stockholm (1957, 1962 and 1967) - Gummesons Gallery is one Scandinavia's foremost contemporary art galleries. Launched in 1912 by Carl Gummeson, a local book dealer, it quickly forged a reputation for supporting Modern Art). Galerie Iris Clert, Paris (1958, 1960 and 1961), Zurich (1959), London (1960), Galerie du Haut Pavé, Paris (1961), Galerie Pierre, Stockholm (1964); With 'Aktiv Färg' (Active Colour) at Galerie Blanche, Stockholm (1961)

Examples of WernerÂ’s works are held in the collections of Moderna Museet (Museum of Modern Art), Nationalmuseum (National Museum) and H. M. Koynen's collection in Stockholm, Norrköping Museum and Lund University Art Museum. There is also a museum dedicated to Gösta Werner at the harbor in Simrishamn, southern Sweden

Gösta Werner died in Stockholm on 13th November 1989, aged 80.
