Additional Information

Vanja Ebbersten was born in Lerum, Västergötland in 1920. She was a Swedish artist and designer.

Ebbersten attended evening classes at Slöjdföreningens Skola (The Scolarship Association) in Gothenburg (1937-1941) before attending the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Konstakademien) in Stockholm.

In 1948, Ebbersten participated in the Nordic Graphic Exhibitions (Nordiska Grafikutställningen) at Liljevalchs Konsthall - Liljevalchs konsthall is an art gallery (established in 1916) designed by architect Carl Bergsten located on the Djurgården island in Stockholm. In his review of the exhibition, the art critic Gustaf Näsström wrote that Ebbersten’s wood engraving already had 'an amazing graphic purity' while combining both 'poetry and imagination' (Stockholmstidningen, 11th April 1948). Later that year Ebbersten was included in the 'Åtta Unga Grafiker' exhibition at the De Ungas Salong in Stockholm. In 1949, Ebbersten also exhibited at the Nordic Art Association's exhibition (Nordiska Konstförbundets Utställning) in Copenhagen.

Ebbersten was a member of, and exhibited frequently with, the Swedish Artists' Association (Konstnärernas Riksorganisation) and the Graphic Society (Grafiska Sällskapet).

Ebbersten published two children’s books, 'Vanja's ABC-Book' (1943) and 'Bambina' (1949).

Examples of Ebbersten's works are held in the collections of Moderna Museet (Museum of Modern Art) and Nationalmuseum (National Museum) in Stockholm and the Gothenburg Art Museum.

Vanja Ebbersten died in 1994, aged 74.
