Nils Wedel (1897-1967)

Nils Adolf Wedel was born in Gothenburg on 4th February 1897. He was a Swedish painter and designer.

Wedel attended the Slöjdföreningens Skola (Handicraft Society School) in Gothenburg (1915-17) where he studied under the Swedish painter and designer Albert Eldh (1878-1955).

Wedel travelled widely. He visited Copenhagen (1919-20), Paris (1921- 22) - where he spent a year at the Académie Moderne (also known as the Académie Léger-Ozenfant) studying under the French artist Emile Othon Friesz (1879-1949), Munich (1922), Rome (1949) and England (1962).

He lived in Denmark (1923-28) and then Malmö (1928-38). From 1939 until 1958 Wedel taught decorative painting and graphics at the Handicraft Society School in Gothenburg. He was married to textile artist Alice Wedel (1895-1984).

Nil Wedel died on 17 July 1967 in Kleva, Sweden, aged 70.
