Additional Information

Hertha Bengtson was born in Blekinge County, Southern Sweden in 1917. She was a Swedish potter and glass artist.

Having originally trained as a school teacher, Bengtson began work as a porcelain painter at Hackers Porslinsfabrik in 1937. In 1941 moved to Rörstrand where, in 1950, she designed the Blå Eld (Blue Fire) dinner service - one of the most popular services in Sweden, and in 1953, Koka Blå (Koka Blue).

Bengtson studied for a year (1948) at Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris and in the 1950s made study trips to France, England, Italy, Greece, Israel, Lebanon and Egypt

Following a change of ownership ownership at Rörstrand in 1964, Bengtsson moved to Höganäs Ceramics. In the 1970s she also worked in Germany, at Thomas Thomas in Rosenthal. In the 1990s, Bengtsson took up glassmaking. Renting a studio in Strömberg, she created a range of unique works in clear, strong colours.

Hertha Bengtson died in 1993, aged 76.
