Alfred Manessier was a French abstract painter, lithographer, and designer of tapestries and stained glass.

Manessier studied architecture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1929. In 1935 he became a pupil of Roger Bissière (1886-1964) at the Académie Ranson.

Manessier initially painted in the Cubist-Surrealist tradition but by 1945 his work became more abstract.

Manessier exhibited with Jean Le Moal (1909-2007) and Gustave Singier (1909-1984) in 1944 and 1946. His first solo exhibition at the Galerie Billiet Caputo in Paris (1949). He was awarded First Prize at the (1955) Pittsburgh International Exhibition of Contemporary Painting and the main painting prize at the (1962) Venice Biennale. Lives in Paris and Emancé.

The Grand Palais, in Paris, honoured Manessier with an extensive retrospective

in 1992. Following the success of this retrospective, the French government awarded Manessier the Legion d'Honneur de l'Ordre national du merite, and he became Commandeur des arts et des lettres.

Manessier died in France on 1st August 1993, aged 81
