Annie Bergman was born in Liège, Belgium on 15th December 1889. She was a Swedish artist and designer.
Bergman attended Konstfack (University College of Arts, Crafts and Design) and Althins Målarskola - a private painting school in Stockholm which prepared students for admission to the Academy of Fine Arts - before studying at Konstakademien (Academy of Fine Arts), Stockholm (1908-1912). Bergman travelled to Germany, Italy and (in 1914) Paris, where she studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière.
In the 1920s Bergman worked as an illustrator for Stockholm's newspapers and magazines - Her theatrical caricatures are held in the collection of the theatre museum (teatermuseum) at Drottningholm Palace, on the outskirts of Stockholm, and illustrated her own childrens stories, 'Dalhästen' (1923), 'Sagan om Jätten och Barner' (The Tale of the Giant and the Children) (1933).
It is for her woodcuts and linocuts that she is best known - which she exhibited throughout Scandinavia, England, France, Belgium, Italy, Poland and USA.
Examples of her work are held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art (Moderna Muséet) and National Museum, Stockholm; Gothenburg Art Museum; Malmö Museum, The Altertina Museum, Vienna; Centre de la Gravure et de Iimage Imprimée, Belgium; National Museum, Kraków and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris.
Bergman was a member of the Swedish Artists Association (Svenska Konstnärernas Förening), The Swedish Women's Association (Föreningen Svenska Konstnärinnor) and was a driving force behind the Artists' National Organizations Graphic Society during the 1930s and 1940s.
Annie Bergman died on 11th January 1987, aged 97.
