Additional Information

David Carson is an American graphic designer. He is best known for his innovative magazine design, and use of experimental typography. Arguably the most influential graphic designer of the nineties, his widely-imitated aesthetic defined an era.

A professional surfer himself (in 1989, he was ranked 9th in the world), Carson was hired to art direct Surfer magazine's annual catalogue publication Surfer Style. It soon became apparent to Carson and his editor, Neil Feinman, that the magazine needed a radical change in direction, so they changed the magazine's name, content and frequency and Beach Culture was born. Although Beach Culture magazine (1989-1991) only survived for six (quarterly) issues before closing, the magazine won over 150 design awards and allowed Carson to make his first significant impact on the world of graphic design and typography.
