Label to reverse reads: ‘British Official Photo. B.6897/RN. Caen: The Aftermath of Battle. A picture taken in Caen immediately after its occupation by British and Canadian troops on July 9th 1944. Large areas of the town are reported to be in ruins from bombing and shell fire. Caen, at the hub of 12 major roads, is France's sixth port and thus of vital importance to the germans who defended it heavily and left the streets thickly planted with mines. Picture shows: A section of British Engineers move through the ruins to clear away mines and booby traps. (Picture issued 1944).'
