Tadeusz-Marya Sempinski 1927-1998

Tadeusz-Marya (Teddy) Sempinski was born in Poland in 1927 and moved to Västerås in central Sweden in 1947.

Sempinski attended the Konstfack (University College of Arts, Crafts and Design) in Stockholm for a year in 1950 and then studied at the Konsthögskolan (Royal Institute of Art) in 1951. As a student, Sempinski made repeated trips to France, Spain and England.

In 1952, Sempinski participated in (and organised) the group exhibition 'Västerås-konstnärer' (Vasteras artists). In 1955 he received the City of Västerås Cultural Award (Västerås stads Kulturstipendium) - An award he received again in 1982, 1991 and 1992.

Between 1957-61 Sempinski exhibited at the National Museum's (Nationalmuseum) annual 'Young Illustrators' (Ungatecknare) exhibition and, in 1962 and 1963 at the 'Stockholm Salons' (Stockholmssalongerna) held at the Liljevalchs art gallery (Liljevalchs konsthall) located on the Djurgården island in Stockholm. In 1968, he exhibited alongside the Dutch expressionist artist Folke Heybroek (1913-1983) and the Finish artist Osmo Isaksson (1918-1997) at a group exhibition in Västerås. Sempinski's final exhibition was at the Swedish Cultural Centre in Paris in 1990.

Sempinski died in Västerås in 1998, aged 71

Memorial exhibitions were held at the Västerås Art Museum (Västerås konstmuseum) in 1999 and at the Vasteras Artist Association (Västerås Konstförening) in 2002.

Sempinski's public (sculptural and mosiac) works include 'Composition with moons' (1957) at the Västerås Engineering Works (Västerås stads tekniska verk), 'Garden of imagination' (1958) and 'Composition' (1959) at the Västerås City Hall. Further examples of Sempinski's work are held in the collections of the National Museum 'New Construction Region' (1958), King Gustaf VI Adolf's collection, Höganäs Museum of Art and the Västerås Artist Association.
