Karl (Philip) von Schantz 1928-1998

Karl Philip Gunnar von Schantz was born in Saint Olai parish, Norrkoping on 21st February 1928. He was a Swedish artist and designer.

Von Schantz attend Otte Sköld's (Otte Skölds målarskola) Painting School in Stockholm (1950) and then studied under the French sculptor, painter, teacher and writer André Lhote (1885-1962) in Paris (1951). He returned to Stockholmin 1952 to study at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts (Kungliga Konsthögskolan) in until 1957 where he studied under the Swedish painter Hugo Ruhr (1895-1971) and design at their School of Graphic Art.

In 1959 Von Schantz started teaching at the Konsthögskolan in Stockholm,. In 1962 he was appointed director of the Grafikskolan (Graphics School) and, in 1963, the Professor of Graphic Art at the Konstakademien (Royal Academy of Fine Arts) design school in Stockholm (until 1973). He was Director of the Moderna Museet (Museum of Modern Art) in Stockholm (1973–1977), Chairman of the Association for Graphic Art (1972 to 1988) and President of the Konstakademien (Royal Academy of Fine Arts), Stockholm from 1987 until 1992.

Von Schantz exhibited extensively. His first solo exhibition was at Länsmuseet, Linköping (1956). Other notable exhibitions include Gummesons Konsthall, Stockholm (1958 and 1960), Liljevalchs Konsthall, Stockholm (1965); Galerie Aronowitsch, Stockholm (1967 to 1990), Kunsterforbundet, Oslo (1969), A retrospective at the Graphic Society, Stockholm (1973), Center Culturel Suédois, Paris (1978), Stefanotti, New York (1981); Philadelphia, USA (1988); Konstakademien, Stockholm (1993). Group exhibitions include Östergötland Art Association's spring salon (1951); Nordic Graphic Union, Norway (1954); 'Svart och Vitt' (Black and White) Konstakademien (Academy of Fine Arts), Stockholm (1955); Graphic Arts of Sweden, New York (1959); Moderna Museet (Museum of Modern Art), Stockholm (1962); Tokyo Graphic Biennial (1966); 'Contemporary Swedish GraphicsÂ’, London (1970); San Francisco Museum of Art (1973); 'Swedish Art' NUNSKU exhibition, China (1985)

Examples of his works are held in collections and museums across the world including Moderna Museet (Museum of Modern Art) and Nationalmuseum (National Museum) in Stockholm; British Museum, London; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen, Denmark; Bradford City Art Gallery, United Kingdom; Hanaholmen, Helsinki, Finland; National Museum, Iceland and Museo Nacional de la Estampa, Mexico City.

Gunnar Karl Philip von Schantz died in Stockholm on 12th August 1998, aged 70.
