Jack Kampmann 1914-1989

Bebe Willemozes (Jack) Kampmann was born in London, to Danish parents, on 19th November 1914. He was a Danish painter.

Kampmann spent his childhood in the USA before moving to Denmark with his parents in the late 1920s. Kampmann attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (Kunstakademiet) in Copenhagen (1933-34) where he studied under Sigurd Wandel (1875 -1947).

Kampmann had strong anti-fascist views. At the outbreak of the Second World War he volunteered for the British Army and fought with them throughout the war. After the war, in 1948, Kampmann married Johanne Olsen and they moved to the Faroe Islands. They returned to Copenhagen in 1964.

Kampmann first exhibited at the annual Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling (Artists Exhibition) in Copenhagen in 1935 (and thereafter, annually until 1938). Other group exhibitions include The Kunststævne forum (1936), Kammeraterne (Colleages) Association - A Danish artists group founded in 1934 by Albert Gammelgaard, Helge Nielsen and Axel Skjelborg (annually between 1947 and 1961), Liljevalchs Konsthall, Stockholm (1961), Faroe and Bergens Kunstforen (1970), Påsken (1974), Skive Museum (1974), Kunsthal Charlottenburg, Copenhagen (1983), Kunstnernes Hus, Ukraine (1986). Solo exhibitions include Galerie Birch, Copenhagen (1956) and Lunds Konsthall (1962).

Jack Kampmann died on 9th December 1989, aged 75.
