Tage Alyre 1894-1975

Tage Ragnar Alyre was born in Visby on the island of Gotland, Sweden on 6th July 1894. He was a Swedish painter and sculptor.

Although Alyre received no formal training, he did study under Ivan Aguéli (1869-1917), the Swedish painter, author and Islamic Sufis during his time on Gotland before the First World War.

During the First World War Alyre lived in Germany and Austria. In 1921 he took a study trip to France, Spain and Italy. Has subsequently made trips and studied in most European countries and in parts of Africa and Asia, most recently in 1948 in Turkey and neighboring countries.

Alyre first exhibited at Galleri Gummesons in 1928. Gummesons Gallery is one Scandinavia's foremost contemporary art galleries - Launched in 1912 by Carl Gummeson, a local book dealer, it quickly forged a reputation for supporting Modern Art. Lyre first exhibited at Galerie Moderne in 1935 and was included in their 'Modern konst i hemmiljö' (Modern Art in the Home) exhibitions in 1942 and 1945. Internationally, Alyre exhibited in Ankara and Istanbul in 1948 followed by an exhibition in his hometown of Visby in 1949. In 1987, Alyre's paintings were included in a travelling group exhibition organised by the National Art Museums in Sweden.

Examples of Alyre's works are held in the collections of the Nationalmuseum (National Museum) and Moderna Museet (Museum of Modern Art) in Stockholm and the Dolmabahçe Palace, Istanbul.

Tage Alyre died in 1975, aged 81.
