Pär Andersson 1926-2015

Pär Andersson was born in Skellefteå on 12th December 1926. He was a Swedish painter.

Andersson attended the Konstfackskolan (University College of Arts, Crafts and Design) in Stockholm (1944-48) and, after receiving a scolarship from the Konstfackskolan, travelled to Paris in 1949 to study under the French sculptor, painter, teacher and writer André Lhote (1885-1962). Andersson returned to Stockholm in 1951 where he continued his studies, under the Swedish painter and sculptor Olle Nyman (1909-1999) at the Konstakademiens (Royal Academy of Fine Arts) until 1956.

Andersson first exhibited (pencil drawings and oil paintings) at a group exhibition, arranged by Art Associations in Västerbotten, held in Skellefteå in 1949.

It was while Andersson was studying at the Konstfackskolan that he first met the artist Astrid (Tesse) Theselius (b.1927. The couple married in 1954. Andersson worked as a teacher at the Konstfackskolan in Stockholm from 1959 until 1972. In 1979, Pär and Tesse moved from their home in Stockholm to Lidgatu, just outside Näsåker.

Andersson exhibited in over forty exhibitions throughout his carrer and became a member of the Konstakademien (Royal Academy of Fine Arts) in 1973. The Härnösand Art Association held a retrospective exhibition for Pär Andersson and Astrid Theselius at the Härnösand Art Gallery in 2009.

Examples of Andersson’s work are held in the collections of the Nationalmuseum (National Museum) and the Moderna Museet (Museum of Modern Art) in Stockholm and the Brooklyn Museum, New York City, USA.

Pär Andersson died in Lidgatu on 18 February 2015. He was 88.
